### %uD83E%uDD31 **Preterm Labor: What It Is and Why It Matters**

---

### %u2705 **Definition:**

**Preterm labor** is when your body starts preparing for birth **too early—before 37 weeks of pregnancy**. If labor leads to delivery, the baby is considered **preterm or premature**.

---

### %uD83D%uDCCA **Preterm Categories (based on weeks):**

| **Type**          | **Gestational Age** |
| ----------------- | ------------------- |
| Late Preterm      | 34 – 36 weeks       |
| Moderate Preterm  | 32 – 33 weeks       |
| Very Preterm      | 28 – 31 weeks       |
| Extremely Preterm | < 28 weeks          |

---

### %u26A0%uFE0F **Causes & Risk Factors:**

* Previous preterm birth
* Twin or multiple pregnancy
* Uterine or cervical abnormalities (e.g., short cervix)
* Infections (e.g., urinary tract, vaginal, or intrauterine)
* Vaginal bleeding (e.g., from placenta previa or abruption)
* Smoking, drug or alcohol use
* High stress or physical trauma
* Medical conditions (e.g., high blood pressure, gestational diabetes)
* Being underweight or obese

---

### %uD83E%uDE7A **Symptoms of Preterm Labor:**

If you're before 37 weeks and notice any of these, contact your healthcare provider immediately:

* Regular or frequent contractions (tightening of the belly)
* Menstrual-like cramps or low backache
* Pelvic pressure
* Vaginal discharge: increase in amount or watery/mucus/bloody
* Ruptured membranes (water breaking)

---

### %uD83E%uDDEA **Diagnosis:**

* **Pelvic exam** to check cervical dilation.
* **Ultrasound** to measure cervix length.
* **Monitoring contractions** and fetal heart rate.
* **Swab test** (fetal fibronectin) to detect risk of early delivery.

---

### %uD83E%uDE79 **Management & Treatment Options:**

* **Hospital observation** and bed rest (in some cases).
* **Tocolytics:** Medications that slow or stop contractions.
* **Corticosteroids:** Help speed up fetal lung development.
* **Magnesium sulfate:** Reduces the risk of brain complications in very preterm babies.
* **Antibiotics:** If water has broken, to prevent infection.

---

### %uD83D%uDC76 **Why It Matters:**

Preterm birth increases risks of:

* Breathing problems (underdeveloped lungs)
* Feeding difficulties
* Low birth weight
* Temperature instability
* Infections
* Long-term developmental delays

---

### %uD83D%uDCAC **What You Can Do:**

* Go to all prenatal appointments.
* Treat infections early.
* Avoid smoking, alcohol, and drug use.
* Manage stress.
* Report any unusual symptoms immediately.
