What to Expect at 24–28 Weeks of Pregnancy

 Baby’s Development

  • Size: Baby grows from about 30 cm to 37 cm in length, weighing roughly 600 g to 1 kg.
  • Movements: Kicks, rolls, and stretches are stronger and more coordinated.
  • Skin: Becoming less transparent as more fat develops beneath the skin.
  • Hearing: Fully functional—baby can recognize your voice and other familiar sounds.
  • Lungs: Developing more air sacs, though still not ready for full breathing outside the womb.
  • Eyes: Beginning to open and blink; can detect light through the womb.
  • Sleep Cycles: Baby starts having regular sleep and wake patterns.

 Changes in Your Body

  • Belly Growth: Rapid bump growth as baby gains more weight.
  • Braxton Hicks Contractions: You may start feeling mild, irregular tightening of the uterus.
  • Increased Heart Rate: Your heart is working harder to pump blood for you and your baby.
  • Possible Discomforts: Back pain, pelvic pressure, and occasional swelling in hands and feet.
  • Digestive Changes: Heartburn and constipation may become more noticeable.

 Medical Care & Tests

  • Glucose Screening Test (between 24–28 weeks) to check for gestational diabetes.
  • Continue regular prenatal check-ups every 4 weeks.
  • Monitor blood pressure and urine to check for preeclampsia.
  • Fundal height measurement to ensure healthy growth.
  • Discuss birth plan preferences with your healthcare provider.

 Tips for This Stage

  • Eat balanced meals with enough protein, iron, and fiber.
  • Drink plenty of water to help with swelling and digestion.
  • Practice gentle prenatal exercises to support posture and reduce back pain.
  • Wear comfortable maternity clothing and supportive shoes.
  • Consider starting antenatal classes if you haven’t already.
