Baby’s Sleep Cycles During Pregnancy
Baby’s Sleep Cycles During Pregnancy
By 24–28 weeks of pregnancy, your baby’s brain and nervous system are developed enough to start showing distinct sleep and wake patterns. These patterns become more refined as pregnancy progresses and play an important role in healthy growth and brain development.
1. Types of Sleep
- Quiet Sleep (Non-REM sleep):
- Baby is still and calm.
• Movements are minimal.
• Heart rate and breathing are steady.
• Important for physical growth and energy restoration. - Active Sleep (REM-like sleep):
- Baby may kick, stretch, or move more actively.
• Breathing movements and heart rate vary.
• Rapid Eye Movement (REM) begins, linked to brain development and memory formation.
• This is when the baby may even dream.
2. Duration and Patterns
- Early sleep cycles last about 20–40 minutes each.
• By the third trimester, cycles may lengthen to 60–90 minutes.
• Babies spend about 50% of their time in REM sleep, compared to only 20–25% in adults—highlighting the importance of REM for brain growth.
3. Day vs Night
- Babies don’t yet follow a true circadian rhythm (day-night cycle).
• Many mothers notice babies are more active at night because daytime movements of the mother rock the baby to sleep.
• At night, when the mother is resting, the baby’s movements become more noticeable.
4. Developmental Importance
- Brain growth (especially during REM sleep).
• Memory and learning capacity.
• Practice for breathing movements.
• Physical development (growth hormone is released during sleep).
5. What Moms Experience
- Periods of strong kicks and rolls (active sleep) alternating with calm, quiet times (quiet sleep).
• Noticeable rhythms, such as bursts of activity every half-hour or so.
Summary
By the second half of pregnancy, your baby already has a structured pattern of quiet and active sleep cycles, spending half of their time in REM-like sleep that is critical for brain development. Although they don’t yet follow a day-night schedule, their sleep cycles are a reassuring sign of healthy growth.
