What Is the 20-Week Scan?
What Is the 20-Week Scan?
The 20-week scan, also known as the anatomy scan or anomaly scan, is a detailed ultrasound done halfway through pregnancy (usually between 18 and 22 weeks).
Purpose of the 20-Week Scan
- Examine the baby’s major organs (heart, brain, kidneys, lungs, stomach).
- Measure baby’s growth (head, abdomen, femur length).
- Check for potential physical abnormalities or developmental issues.
- Confirm the placenta position and amniotic fluid levels.
- Often determine the baby’s sex, if you wish to know.
What Happens During the Scan?
- Performed on your abdomen (transabdominal ultrasound).
- Takes about 20–30 minutes, sometimes longer if baby’s position makes viewing difficult.
- The sonographer carefully examines and measures all key structures.
- You’ll usually see your baby’s heartbeat, face, limbs, and movements clearly.
Limitations and Considerations
- While detailed, it cannot detect every condition (some conditions may appear later).
- If issues are suspected, you may be referred for additional tests or scans.
