Sleep pattern of a newborn baby.

Home / Articles / Sleep pattern of a newborn baby.

- **Total Sleep Time:**
  - Newborns typically sleep about 16–18 hours within a 24-hour period.

- **Sleep Cycles:**
  - Their sleep is divided into short cycles, often lasting around 50–60 minutes each.
  - These cycles include both active (REM) sleep—which supports brain development—and quiet (non-REM) sleep.

- **Frequent Waking:**
  - Newborns wake frequently, often every 2–4 hours, primarily for feeding, diaper changes, and comfort.

- **Day-Night Irregularity:**
  - Initially, they do not have a well-established circadian rhythm, so sleep may appear irregular with periods of wakefulness during both day and night.

- **Gradual Development:**
  - Over the first few months, sleep patterns begin to consolidate and lengthen as their internal clock develops.

- **Tips for Improvement:**
  - Establishing a soothing bedtime routine and creating a conducive sleep environment can help gradually regulate their sleep patterns.

These sleep patterns are entirely normal for newborns and gradually evolve as the baby grows.
