Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound is a scan of the female pelvic organs, including the uterus, endometrium, ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures. It is commonly used to investigate pelvic pain, heavy periods, irregular bleeding, fibroids, ovarian cysts, fertility concerns and other gynaecological symptoms.

What is a pelvic ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound is a safe and painless scan used to assess the female pelvic organs.

What does it assess?

  • Uterus
  • Endometrium
  • Ovaries
  • Adnexa
  • Pelvic spaces
  • Sometimes the bladder

Why is it done?

This scan may be requested to investigate:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy periods
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fertility concerns
  • Suspected endometriosis
  • Follow-up of known findings

What can it show?

  • Fibroids
  • Polyps
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Enlarged ovaries
  • Pelvic masses
  • Some signs suggestive of endometriosis
  • Fluid in the pelvis

Is this the same as a transvaginal scan?

Not always. A pelvic scan may be done:

  • Transabdominally (through the tummy)
  • Transvaginally (internal, if appropriate)

Your doctor or sonographer will advise which option is most suitable.

Preparation

Often a full bladder is required before the scan.
